Could you please attach /var/log/installer/syslog, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/partman to this bug, following the directions in http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs? Thanks in advance.

it wouldn't let me attach those files. I booted from the liveCD, and I did
setup mail, but it wouldn't let me attach system files. Is there a way to do
that, without the sudo command?

You don't neccessarily need mail to attach files. As explained in the wiki page, you can attach files from the Malone interface, from the "ad a comment/attachment" button that you click to post a comment.

sorry if I sent the files twice, the web page seemed to hang and not complete
the file transfer.
At least I know I can duplicate the error, it happens every time I try the
install. I also have to change the validation.py file to be able to create
the root partition.
I might try to download & install 2.0 just to see if that works.

While this looks like a dupe of 47046, it can't be because it has been fixed.

It is a duplicate of bug 47046; pbcartwright, it looks like your nobbling of validation.py broke that again. You need to format /.

You could try upgrading ubiquity to 1.2.6 from edgy-proposed rather than editing validation.py by hand ...

OK, I can live with having to format / again, but when I installed I
formatted /, /tmp, /var, /usr & /usr/local. The only partitions that
were not formatted were /home & swap. I am just getting bored of
reinstalling.

Ok Colin, problem temporarily solved. Ubuntu does not like partitions
to have any restrictions placed on them. As a derivative of Debian I
thought that I could partition according to their plan and not simply
use defaults for a more secure system. Unfortunately it would seem
not. I edited my fstab file so that instead of defaults it was
restricted with no-exec, no-suid & no-dev. Now it is happy. I am not
sure if I am though.
