Found fix for my problem:

From terminal: two things

edit /etc/default/console-setup

Code:
sudo gedit /etc/default/console-setup
AND reconfigure console-setup

Code:
sudo dpkg -reconfigure console-setup
Note to get the recovery mode fixed AFTER doing the above:

1. boot into recovery mode
2. wait until its finished
3. press the down arrow until no movement on your screen
4. enter
Code:
dpkg -reconfigure console-setup
Yes, I know you can't read what you typed.
5. hit ENTER
6. enter
Code:
reboot
7. hit enter

It's not entirely clear to me what's the issue there.

friendly-recovery got some pretty big changes done in Oneiric, one being that friendly-recovery now starts a lot earlier in the boot sequence which very well could fix your problem.

Could your try Oneiric beta2 and see if the problem is fixed?

This bug was fixed in the package friendly-recovery - 0.2.18

---------------
friendly-recovery (0.2.18) oneiric; urgency=low

  * Update upstart job
    - Replace tabs by spaces from last change (for consistency)
    - Start hostname and console-setup from pre-start (LP: #524605, LP: #782872)
