Bug Description

Contacts was new to GNOME 3.2. It is a standalone contacts manager which uses EDS (and therefore works with Ubuntu One?). It's useful since we're no longer installing Evolution by default. More importantly, it is *required* for Empathy 3.3.90 and above.

It meets the requirements for main inclusion.

1. Availability - packaged & builds in Ubuntu universe & Debian testing

2. Security - Part of GNOME. There are no known security bugs:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=gnome-contacts

3. QA -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-contacts
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?repeatmerged=no&src=gnome-contacts
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=product%3Agnome-contacts

4. UI - Translated using intltool

5. Dependencies: https://bazaar.launchpad.net/+branch/ubuntu/gnome-contacts/view/head:/debian/control
All dependencies are already in main

6. Standards compliant 3.9.2

7. Maintenance - We are in sync with Debian (except that we've gone ahead and packaged the 3.4 version)

This probably needs an FFe first. Is this intended to be on the CD?

When I looked at g-contacts closely before Oneiric's release, it did not do anything empathy's contact list could not do, and it was very rough still.

I installed 3.3.90, and I must say I'm shocked how poorly designed this program is. When you start it the first time, you get a totally unintelligible setup screen with two unobvious choices where to keep your contacts, and two misplaced buttons which at first appear to be a menu. (attaching screenshot).

The main window has a very poor layout, tons of empty entries, and it does not show much information. (attaching screenshot).

Frankly, this is not an app I want to see in our default install. Evolution has a much better UI to manage contacts.

If the new empathy needs this, I strongly suggest to keep the current empathy version and backport some bug fixes, or revert the removal of empathy's builtin contact list.

Oh man, I just ran Contacts 3.4.0 for the first time and I second pitti's comments. This is something I'm leery of showcasing to users in the default install. Though looking at its design page, this is how it is supposed to look: https://live.gnome.org/Design/Apps/Contacts

We wanted Contacts at UDS because we were trying to reduce our delta with GNOME and adding it would let us use the latest empathy. But I think this should have a sign-off by Jason Warner (Desktop product manager). I'll assign this bug to him.

I talked to Jason about this, and we figure that the work Ken VanDine has to make contacts look nicer (pull app-specific css theming from adwaita to light-themes and don't show uncategorized contacts by default) will get us most of the way there.

Besides theming ugliness, there will still be workflow issues like pitti mentioned (confusing first screen, etc). But the alternative is to carry a large delta against empathy to avoid this new app. Probably better all around to accept this and have it improve.
