I'm pretty convinced this must be in the stage before lightdm. The screenshot shows a dialog with window decorations, but unity-greeter does not run a window manager. Reassigning to ubiquity.

affects: unity-greeter (Ubuntu Oneiric) → ubiquity (Ubuntu Oneiric)

This looks like a caught Python exception, not an error message from C/Vala. I suppose oem-config has something like a catch-all "except:" somewhere which causes the error message to be displayed in a dialog box? Perhaps it should rather crash normally and have apport pick up the traceback, so that we get a sensible stack trace?

Changed in ubiquity (Ubuntu Oneiric):
assignee: nobody → Ubuntu Installer Team (ubuntu-installer)

I don't see anything in ubiquity that might plausibly produce this exception.
