Volumes change name when mounted/unmounted in Nautilus

Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Example:

My mobile phone is listed as "Sony Ericsson Memory Stick Music Player" when unmounted, but then it changes to "disk" or "disk-1", "disk-2", etc. when I mount it.

This behaviour is consistent with all types of volume. Another example being a "238 GB Volume" changing to "disk" or "disk-n" in the list.

I think the displayed names should be the descriptive name, not just the folder name that it gets mounted into.

This is possibly a bug in hal/pmount or something, sorry if it's filed incorrectly.

Thank you for your bug report.
Disk name after they are mounted are choose by gnome-mount, so i mark this bug as a gnome-mount bug.

Tentatively assigning to gnome-vfs2, but it's also possible that this is a hal bug. Can you please do a

  lshal > hal.txt

when the device is mounted and attach hal.txt here?

what about the lshal log?

I don't think that will really be useful, but if you insist I can do something like that (be more specific though, as I'm not really sure what you mean.)

Observations:

Place: Unmounted / Mounted
----
Panel -> Places menu: (not there) / "disk"
Nautilus' computer:///: "Sony Ericsson Memory Stick Music Player" / "Sony Ericsson Memory Stick Music Player: disk"
Nautilus' "Places" sidebar: "Sony Ericsson Memory Stick Music Player" / "disk"
Nautilus' "Tree" sidebar: (not there) / "disk"
Nautilus' desktop: (not there) / "disk"
Rhythmbox: (not there) / "Sony Ericsson Memory Stick Music Player"

Fair bit of inconsistency here. I think it needs to be standardised somehow.

Marking confirmed, not really a bug, the naming could be better though

The naming could definitely be better, as with multiple devices, it is not easy to identify which one is which when you want to unmount / eject a specific one.

I also have a problem when trying to unmount a volume on a Sony Erricsson W810i. The "Phone" unmounts fine but the "Phone Card" (as displayed inside Computer) seems to lock up the system. I keep receiving a message that the system is still writing to the device. Eventually I have to power off the computer & files have failed to be wrote to the memory stick in the phone (512Mb).

could you try if that's still an issue using the gvfs version?

Sebastien
This was a long time ago. I am no longer running the same OS version. PC's
are now running Kubuntu 8.10. If you would still like me to try I will..
Just let me know !

Kind Regards
