Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

Lots of users installs empathy because they wanna google talk compatible voice talk through Jabber/XMPP. But unfortunately Ubuntu's empathy package doesn't have VOIP support :(
So, please enable voip (audio/video talk) support in empathy.

The voip branch of gossip is not up-to-date. It has many conflics, if someone wants to help to propose a patch against svn HEAD to add to voip stack it would be very appreciate and will help merging everything in head.

I would subscribe to this too, just installed gossip-telepathy in hope of a nice xmpp client supporting googletalk (now merged into xmpp specs.)
I will try to do some searching about how to make the voip enabled branch work in ubuntu, any hints on what could go wrong?

So, if I understand, you are willing to make a feisty package and push it on the repo when it gets merged upstream?
Also, I don't understand, isn't feisty in version freeze already, can this go through? It would be great, as SIP is really hard to use, and wengo is very old-fashioned.

Upstream is not going to fix it, as they removed support for telepathy in gossip. empathy in gutsy might fix this though. Do you have the problem there?

Empathy Audio/Video support is worked upstream now, but it's too late to integrate it into Gutsy. Maybe in Hardy if the progress of their work permit it.

In my opinion it's not an ubuntu bug, VoIP is being worked upstream and is disabled upstream because it's by no means ready for common uses. When it gets stable it will be enabled upstream and ubuntu will get it once it's released.

Alot of people are frustrated with the lack of a working jingle-capable XMPP client in release versions of ubuntu.

What's the near-term direction for IM on Ubuntu? Is the Ubuntu team planning to replace the default clients gaim/kopete with telepathy in an upcoming release? If so, is empathy the officially-blessed telepathy-based client for gnome which will replace gaim?

How can someone like myself get involved upstream?

I would like to help if possible since it is clear that devs/maintainers are spread rather thin in the RT comms area right now (big ideas, but too many projects going at once)

If there is some jingle-capable client for which the support is somewhat stable upstream (kopete, empathy, or other) perhaps we could build some alternative debs for gutsy.

I know all the devs are super-busy, and this is free software, but to me no jingle = ubuntu broken.

Empathy will probably be the official GNOME IM client at some point, it got rejected for GNOME 2.22 because it's not stable enough yet but will be proposed again for 2.24. Empathy has experimental support for audio/video but the code is disabled by default because it does not works pretty well. As for the backends, jingle and sip should work pretty well.

Of course you can help upstream by trying Empathy with voip enabled and fix bugs

Could be voice support present but commented out in source package files? Similar approach uses Debian Etch with freeradius package that can't ship with pre-compiled TLS support, but many users want it...

Just rebuild Empathy with --enable-voip and install telepathy-stream-engine
