Use "sda", not "(sda)". (Ubiquity should have caught this, though.)

In bug 71099, Andy Schaumberg suggested presenting a drop-down box with valid device names.

ubiquity now validates the boot device string, only letting the user select a valid one, as of version 1.7.7 (Hardy).

I hope the user is told what the valid ones are, eg. by drop-down box as suggested above.

Is the user going to be expected to know the weird grub naming convention, which seems to be used nowhere else in the installer, or is the installer going to show the same drive/partition names as are used by the rest of the installation and by the final running system. I recall a bug about this years ago.

The installer shows a list of devices and partitions that are possible bootloader targets along with a human readable name next to them (such as "Windows XP Professional").
