Bug Description

landscape-client 12.04.1-0ubuntu1, gnome-control-center 1:3.3.92-0ubuntu2, Ubuntu Pangolin

1. Open System Settings.

What you see: "Management Service".

What's wrong with this:
* What's a management service?
* Even if you know what it is, which management service is this one?
* It's inconsistent with the labelling of the Ubuntu One panel.

A generic label might make sense if we were trying to make remote administration a completely de-branded thing (like Backup, for example). But we aren't: the very first thing that happens when I click the icon is a dialog that mentions "Landscape" four times in 50 words.

What you should see: "Landscape", or "Landscape Administration".

It would seem "Landscape Systems Management" might be more appropriate?

"Landscape Systems Management" would be more precise. However, if you look at the System Settings window you can see that any three non-tiny words would wrap to three lines (compare "Wacom Graphics Tablet"), the only item on that line to do so. Either "Landscape Management" or "Landscape Administration" would be fine -- I suggested "Landscape Administration" because it's slightly more specific.

This should be fixed in my latest merge proposal.

Dean, I get a bit annoyed when bugs are marked "opinion" (which is basically equivalent in Launchpad to WONTFIX) without an explanation, especially when I think the bug report *is* valid.

Could you please provide some reasoning?

Dean, if you are NAKing this, can you make an appropriate comment in the merge proposal? Thanks

This is a *valid* bug. I don't get why it is "opinion". The change should be in place in Quantal, where translations are not a problem.

Can we get an update on this soon since I have a merge proposal pending for quantal and freeze is approaching

I agree with Matthew that the best description would be "Landscape System Management". The problem is that won't fit. The proposed description of "Landscape management" doesn't work because it's not accurate. You're not managing Landscape. Most users also don't know what Landscape is.

The most descriptive label we can give it that would fit is "System Management" so it's clear what you're intending to manage. We've made the preferences verbose enough that if you click it you're aware of what the utility is.

The proposed label is actually "Landscape Administration" which was signed off on by mpt and others for two cycles now and I think it appropriately addresses this bug.

Sorry, that won't do. It's not accurate. The application doesn't manage Landscape.

or rather, it doesn't administer Landscape.

What do you propose for a fix then?

Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt) wrote :

What is not a matter of "Opinion" is that the naming of the Landscape item is inconsistent with the Ubuntu One item, inconsistent with the Wacom Graphics Tablet item, and inconsistent with its own UI.

If you don't want to give a hint of what the item is for, follow the lead of Ubuntu One and call it just "Landscape". If you do want to give a hint of what it's for, follow the lead of Wacom Graphics Tablet lead and call it "Landscape Administration" or "Landscape Management". And even if it was true that the first word in a compound noun never functions as an adjective (as it does in "cloud OS", "aluminium casing", or "YouTube video"), you have to admit that the UI does, in fact, manage the computer's use of Landscape.

So what about "Landscape Service". That would at least give an indication what it is and also include Landscape to avoid being so vague.

"Landscape Service" definitely will reduce the ambiguous nature of the icon in our UI so I have pushed a new revision and it is awaiting review. Hopefully someone can review this before freeze next week.

@Benjamin, hi, I just made a new release into raring (12.11), it should say "Landscape Service" now. I hope this is what we all agreed upon, I confess I lost track. But that's what is in the upstream code now, and I will SRU it.

Dean Henrichsmeyer (dean) wrote :

Yep, that's correct.

String changes cannot be SRU'd. I'll mark this as fixed as the new name is already in Raring.

Adolfo, landscape-client has an SRU exception which I believe covers string changes too, although that is not particularly mentioned:

Well, as long as string changes are accompanied by the corresponding translation updates, that shouldn't be a problem.
