Bug Description

Feisty Beta AMD64 Desktop CD on Asus P5B-E w/ Core 2 Duo

Live CD crashes with

udevd-event[2074]: run program '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit

and then drops to BusyBox where it complains that

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
    (initramfs)

6.10 and 6.06 boot and install no problem on this system

I'm pretty sure this is related to lib-ata and the JMicron® JMB363 PATA and SATA controller on this motherboard. Get the daily ISO from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ on Monday 4/2, burn it to a CD and boot from it. Kernel version must be 2.6.20-14 or higher.

The 20070402 live-cd resolves one problem.

However a different problem locks the system during boot too. 'Memory remap' has to be disabled in the bios, which limits the system to 3 Gigs of Ram. This problem is discussed and resolved at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=375853

The memory remap can be enabled, thus allowing up to 8 gigs of ram, but one must add to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist the line 'blacklist intel_agp'.

There does not seem to be bug entry here that I can find so perhaps this should be for the latter problem as well?

Also of note is that the attansic LAN card now works out of the box.

Although the Live CD from April 2 may have solved your problem, 2.6.20-14 was not released until later in the week. I might be interesting to download the current daily ISO to see if it has any effect.

Enabling 'memory remap' still causes the Feisty live-cd to crash as of 20070411.

This bug persists in the final release. The live CD will not boot. There appears to be two issues since the live CD locks up in two different ways. 1)the external jmicron sata control needs to be disabled and 2) the memory remap needs to be disabled.

I should add that I have confirmed this on two different systems with the same hardware.

Not necessarily related to the live-cd, but I am experiencing this same problem.

Hardware:
- ASUS P5B-E motherboard w/1501 BIOS revision (latest as of 7/12/2007)
- Intel P965 / ICH8R chipset
- 4x1GB RAM
- Ubuntu x86-64 7.04 Server
- Kernel 'linux-image-2.6.20-16-server'

1) With BIOS option 'Memory remap' feature turned off, OS boots but sees 3GB RAM (as does the BIOS)

2) WIth BIOS option 'Memory remap' feature turned on, OS locks up at "Loading hardware drivers" (but POST indicates 4GB usage)

3) With BIOS option 'Memory remap' feature turned on and kernel boot option "mem=4GB" / "mem=4096MB" turned on, OS boots but only sees 2GB.

This seems to be Ubuntu-NONspecific as we see similar issues in other threads (still not sure if it's a kernel bug or :

http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1938
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1186364

Any help greatly appreciated!

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : Kernel team bugs

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
