I also have a precise ubuntu 64bit. On another machine with fresh install audacity starts ok. I also tried nightly build from ppa (2.0.0+svn20120501+r7154-0~r12~precise1) and got the same crash. Running as roo does not make a difference. Hope this can help tracking down what happens.

i got the same crash with sweep, the strace looked very similar at the end. The crash references libcsound64-52. I uninstalled this library and audacity starts! Clearly, this bug is an issue with libcsound64, not audacity.

Reinforcing ferro's observations: Removal of libcsound64-5.2 1:5.17.6~dfsg-1 eliminated segmentation fault in both audacity and sweep. Preceding stderr lines such as ironroot reported persist -- apparently separate from the immediate issue.

sudo apt-get remove libcsound64-5.2

It'll deprive you of csound and/or csladspa, but perhaps a desirable sacrifice
 against being deprived of audacity.

Hi Ben, thanks for the upload to precise-proposed. Unfortunately, the bug # is not formatted right in the changelog (its missing the # sign). I hate to be a stickler, but this causes problems with the various bug bots and tracking systems.

I am rejecting it. Can you re-upload with the proper format LP: #990683 ? Thanks.

I've always had a problem with Audacity "randomly terminating" while using it to record ham radio traffic (sound-activated recording) and this bug seems to get worse with each new ppa upgrade.
I've had to resort to using virtualbox windozeXP and an old sonogram windows program.
Too bad Linux programs are so flaky :(
