Bug Description

In ubuntu linux (Dapper or Breezy) there is georgian ka_GE.UTF-8 locale, but no font support...that means that Ubuntu and Debian has no native support for this fonts. Matthew Garrett has provided .deb package.
http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~mjg59/ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts_0.1_all.deb
it's only 275,3 KB so it would be great if you include them into main.

The deb is useless, we need a source package. Is this available anywhere? It does not seem to be on Matthew's page.

The package is in dapper and in universe. The question is what we do with it: Our usual appraoch is to put it into *-desktop, but CD space is precious these days; Colin, it would increase the CDs by 280 KB, would that be okay? If not, I'll add it to language-support-ka, which should work not too bad either.

Here is our communitys' (Georgian Internet Aliiance) Georgian (2 days old) unicode fonts:
http://www.gia.ge/index.php?ind=downloads&op=section_view&idev=29
3(12) fonts Mono, Serif, Sans (regular, bold, oblique, bold-oblique) light versions of UCS Free

This is pre-release and we're going to refine this fonts
It is considered that they will be included in the UCS free font package - http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/freefont

That would be great opportuinity for Georgian users to have choice. So, would anybody so kind to check mentioned Georgian fonts?
Last edition - http://www.gia.ge/zzz/GIAAries.ttf
License for all abovementioned - GPL

Hello,

It will be really great to know, how GIA's unicode fonts must be? which is our space(KB) limit ?for debian-installer, Mr. Giasher made bitmab fonts too, is it possible include them too ?
(I mean, to have CD startup in Georgian too, a part debian-installer translation, need we translate something other?an example Ubiquity).

We have another serious problem: font rendering. They seem very ugly in Ubuntu (and no problems in Windows environment), where the problem may be ?

Thank You

Sorry, I'm very confused about your latest replies now:

 * If the current ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts that is in universe is ok, then we should seed it to desktop or add it to l-support-ka.
 * If the current package does not work, then we need a better one *very* urgently if it should make it into dapper.

Ugly font rendering could either be due to selecting the wrong font (fontconfig problem), bad rendering of a good font (pango problem), or the font's glyphs themselves are ugly.

ttf-bpg fonts are nice and well done. What i mentioned is possibility of choise.
We're really *not going to [try to] replace* them, especially in hurry.

Same time, we're going to improve our ones and hope they will/could be useful for lot of users.

The most sutable font for GTK gui is BGP's "BPG Rioni" (Sans Serif style.). This font better then "BPG Glaho" font, font is compact in vertical and horizontal and very smooth.

This fonts (naturally) are under GPL License:

bpg_fonts_georgian_subsets_gpl_gnu.zip <--- Rioni is here with .vbf extension.
But better is if we use .otf format(I guess there is no problems, right Martin?):

Thank You...

It's only 26208 bytes, is it the right dimension to be included in Dapper CD?

P.S For future Sir. Guiasher is working on monospaced and bitmap fonts for support terminal applications like debian-installer and similar. Thank You Gia

To add font support to debian-installer, by far the easiest approach is to get the glyphs into unifont. We don't support multiple fonts at present, so extending the one we're using is best.
