codeslinger, this bug has been closed as "fix released" many months ago. Are you using the hardy-updates packages?

Also, juggling configuration files in an update is a no-go area, especially not with something as critical as PAM modules. Changing them during an update automatically is on the very other end on the "trivial" scale.
