Bug Description

On hardy alpha 4, this bug is quite reproducible - it occurs every time I try this after reboot, and often if I try subsequently.

1. Try to enable desktop effects in System / Prefs / Appearance.

2. On my system, it currently fails because the fglrx (8.45.4) driver apparently does not support AIGLX on xserver 1.4. (There's another bug report for this.)

3. Afterwards, however, my CPU usage stays indefinitely near 100%.

top shows glxinfo (~35% CPU) and xorg (~65%) to be the culprits.

Killing glxinfo fixes the problem.

Version information:

kernel: 2.6.24.5-generic

xorg: 1:7.3+10ubuntu4

libgl1-mesa-glx: 7.0.2-4ubuntu2

compiz: 1:0.6.99+git20080204-0ubuntu1

fglrx: 8.45.4 (Catalyst 8-1)

Is it linux-restricted-modules though? I installed Catalyst 8-1 directly instead of using the restricted modules manager.

In that case I'll just close the bug, since we don't support out-of archive software. If you are able to reproduce it with the Ubuntu version of the package, feel free to reopen.

It is also there with the ubuntu packages. In fact, it had been there at least since alpha 3 but I think longer.

Steps to reproduce:
1. reboot
2. run glxinfo from the console (it only hangs the first time I try)

Version info:

kernel 2.6.24-7.12
linux-restricted-modules-generic 2.6.24.7.7
xserver-xorg 1:7.3+10ubuntu4
xorg-driver-fglrx 1:7.1.0-8-01+2.6.24.7-7.17
mesa-utils 7.0.2-4ubuntu2

Only one line:
name of display: :0.0

when I run it a second time after killing (ctrl+c) it runs normally:
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2
...etc...

Hope this narrows it down a bit.

  * nvidia-glx*:
    - When using the nvidia-settings binary for storing
values in xorg.conf it clutters up the file with unneeded settings,
and some are just plain wrong nowadays (the mouse device for
instance). So, don't ship the version included in the drivers, instead
Suggest nvidia-settings -package (again), and fix the issues there.
    - Don't ship nvidia-settings.desktop, only the .png file.
      Nvidia-settings will include the desktop-file.
