Bug Description

When I look at a particular bug and want to cut and paste the bug report URL into for instance a forum posting, it's pretty awkward:
- since I use LP beta, I have to delete the .edge. part.
- since the package might change, I should replace the whole ubuntu/+source/package/+bug/ bunch by bugs/
- I don't know really what the most stable URL should look like

A link somewhere on the bug report page should point to something like https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/124166 to allow for easy reference.

Another use case: If you follow a link to a specific bug comment, there's no where to click to get the full report. Either you have to manually edit the URL in the browser, or if you're lucky, there's a duplicate bug listed which you can click on, and then follow its link back.

Example: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/malone/+bug/124166/comments/3

Hi Tormod,

thanks for the bug report. You don't need to delete the edge part. Launchpad automatically detects if you're a beta tester or not and redirect you to the proper place.
The canonical URL for a bug is https://launchpad.net/bugs/XXX.
The lack of a link back to the report from the comment page is bug 78565
I think there's a usability guideline that says it's not good usability to have a link pointing to the same page you're at. I'll ask our usability expert to comment on.

So, the real problem is that the URL Launchpad gives you for a bug report isn't suitable for long-term use. It's quite long, and if the package is changed, it might end up giving you a page asking you an inappropriate question about whether you want to refile the report on its previous project/package.

One way of fixing this problem would be to provide a link to the unchanging version of the URL, as Tormod suggests.

Another way of fixing the problem, perhaps a better way, would be to make the actual page URL the short version, at least most of the time.

I can just say what's useful for us who actually use launchpad, I don't care what a usability designer with funny-looking glasses makes up :)

Many web sites/CMS provide a "permanent link" for this purpose, since the displayed URL is cluttered with internal web/db server stuff.

Launchpad itself expands "bug XXX" to https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/XXX for me. I understand the ".edge." part, but why the "bugs." ?
