Bug Description

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

I have a Brother HL-2070N printer that I tried to install. I usually use the driver that Ubuntu suggests, has made it back in time for Ubuntu and it has worked very well. The driver do not work with Ubuntu 11.04.
I have always connected the printer as a network printer.
The driver that I use is called:
Brother HL-2060 foomatic / Postscript [eng] (recommended)
The driver is recommended for Brother HL-2070N, the printer prints only blank paper and must be switched off to stop writing ..

With 11:04 Ubuntu OEM installation, the Drive Brother HL-2060 foomatic / Postscript is completely without function or dead?

If I instead Upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 directly upstream through the upgrade procedure so does Brother HL-2060 foomatic / Postscript works great?

/Sincerely Antec

Confirm this is a showstopper issue. Foomatic/Postscript driver does not work at all. Test page looks like this:

%!PS-Adobe-3.0
                             %%LanguageLevel: 2
                                                                   %%DocumentSuppliedResources: (atend)
                                                                                                                                               %%DocmentMe

Followed by blank pages until the printer runs out of paper.

Seems to work fine with Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e driver, though.

Hi Alex yes exactly if you use the"Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e" driver it will work very well, I have also seen it, thanks for informing

First of all, this is the typical behavior if a PostScript driver is used on a PCL-only printer. So at first I want to know whether in your old environment (10.10 or earlier) you were actually using a PostScript driver or whether the system chose a PCL driver automatically.

It seems that something got messed up with automatic driver selection and some printers where PostScript is only available as add-on are considered PostScript printers.

I have the same printer and issue with 11.04. The Postscript driver worked perfectly with the default driver in 10.04.

The printer driver is also constantly reporting "Out of Paper" even though this is not the case.

Re: Comment #6: I meant to refer to properly functioning drivers in 10.10, though the 10.04 default drivers also worked.

Can you follow the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, especially the sections "CUPS error_log" and "Capturing print job data"?

Here is the CUPS error.log file after enabling logging and printing a test page. I should note that despite constantly reporting 'Out of paper' complete with toaster popups from the notification daemon, I _am_ able to print. When I'm home from work I shall also add the job data dump as described at the debugging page.

I should further note that I am using the printer via a network, not a USB, connection.

Ghoti, your error_log contains the following line

I [23/Jun/2011:10:23:44 -0700] [Job 28] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/brlpdwrapperHL2070N

which tells me that you use the driver provided by Brother, so your problem is not the same as of the original reporter of this bug. Otherwise your error_log does not show any problems. So your print job gets processed completely, only the driver is sending something wrong to the printer which causes your "Out of paper" messages. Report the problem to Brother.

Till Kamppeter (till-kamppeter) wrote :

The problem of the original reporter is caused by the printer not being explicitly listed in the database. This means that a printer with a similar names is selected by the fuzzy matching algorithms of system-config-printer. These algorithms are under constant development to improve them. Unfortunately, in some rare cases it happens that the algorithms make wrong choices, especially for unlisted printers, and the mistakes they make change from version to version.

The best solution to fix wrong guesses is listing the device. Therefore I move this bug to the foomatic-db package.

Please try different drivers with this printer, especially "Generic PCL-6/XL printer" with "Foomatic/pxlmono", "Generic PCL-5e printer" with "Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e", and "Brother HL-5040" with "Foomatic/hl1250" and tell which drivers of these work and which one works best.

I have added the HL-2070N upstream to foomatic-db now and also updated the OpenPrinting web site. So you can download PPD files for your printer from

http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Brother/Brother-HL-2070N

I will also add the changes to the foomatic-db package in Oneiric.
