Bug Description

When I activate Desktop-Effects the system freezes randomly, it only works the mouse cursor but it doesn't allow to click anything. If there is any sound track playing it keeps on playing until the song end. Then as i said i can only move the mouse.

When I deactivate Desktop-Effects the system works great.

No, I don't. I have a DELL Inspiron 9300 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon
X300 graphics card with the open source driver.
Thanks!

I'm seeing the same thing with a radeon 8500LE. I can still ssh into the system so I'm attaching some debugging info. If you need anything else, please say so, I can obtain new traces etc when it happens again.

File contains:
- X backtrace
- X strace
- dmesg
- /proc/mtrr
- lspci -vvv

Unfortunately I already killed compiz before performing an strace etc.

I also made a backtrace for X and Compiz by reproducing the bug with GDB attached to the X process and Compiz process from another computer through ssh.

I made a complete backtrace for X and Compiz and a strace for Compiz. Unfortunately, the X strace was about 147 Mb and still not finished while X wasn't crashed yet, so I don't have a valuable X strace.

I think that we can change the status to Confirmed has there's already 3 person having exactly the same problems. And I think that this bug is critical and should be taken seriously has I can randomly hard crash a computer and block access to virtual consoles.

This is mostly the same as I have experienced (and still do) on a Thinkpad x60s.

It all started after a "aptitude upgrade" sometime sunday (GMT+1) two weeks ago, and also after I (for other reasons) did a full reinstall with Gutsy (tribe5) yesterday.

I'm not quite sure if it is totally random because it happens almost everytime I try to resize a xterm window with the mouse, cursor is then "looked" in "resize mode", but I can still move it. I can't remember to have seen this when not resizing a xterm.

The only way I can get out of the "freeze" is by doing a hard shutdown (aka pulling the plug), when I start the computer again after that compiz is up but I have to do a "emerald --replace &" to get emerald up.

I have not tried to ssh in while in "freeze", I can try that next time it happens, but as I consider "pulling the plug" a pretty fatal action I don't want to do it more than absolutely necessary.

And yes it only happens with Compiz activated.

Well the thing is after a few more upgrades, I couldn't start compiz at all, but then i read a post at ubuntuforums where a user had the same problem, he made a new "clean" user and with that he could get compiz running, this works for me on my x60s (intel card), but on two other laptops I've tried it (an older CL56 (ati card) and a brand new T61 (nvidia card)) making a new user and running "compiz --replace -c emerald &" just crashes in the same way as with the original user.

the error I get when compiz crashes is:

I think I saw something like this reported as another bug already, so I will lookup that again instead of going more o.t. here.

back on topic: as of yet I haven't seen the bug described in this thread when running compiz with the second user on my x60s, so I really can't give you anymore details than in my earlier posts on how to reproduce the "freeze"...

Bug #1 : All the screen is freeze but the mouse still works. Typing CTRL + ALT + Backspace doesn't close the X server and it's also impossible to access another TTY, even when switching the keyboard in Raw mode with ALT + SysReq + R. The system can still be accessed through SSH

Bug #2 : Same has bug #1, except that the mouse doesn't even work.

This bug has been tested on Intel graphics, nvidia and ATI, and only happens with ATI.

- open AWN (avant-window-navigator)

The freeze occurs randomly, but the common theme seems to be when a dialog box is being faded in on top of other windows. For instance, I've had it occur when selecting from the dropdown list of URLs in Firefox, and also when using Alt-Tab to switch among windows.

As others have reported, some times the cursor will still responsd (always stuck with the "pointing hand" icon), other times nothing will respond. In both cases, Neither Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace, nor Ctrl-Alt-F1 switch out of X. I have gnome-power-manager set to power down when I press the power button, but that does not work either. I have to hold down the power button to reset the machine.

I just installed Gusty and I'm also experiencing exactly the same problem as MichaelElkins described above, but on a Dell D810 (with radeon card too). Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace doesn't work for me either, but Alt-SysRq-b does "work". It happens so often that there's no way to do any work with that enabled (why is it on by default I don't know), so I turned it off. I tried using the proprietary ATI driver to see if it has the same problem, but then I would just get a message saying the composite extension isn't available. Conclusion, desktop effects not usable on this laptop in any way.

Revision history for this message
Saivann Carignan (oxmosys) wrote :

Same has jmspeex, Ctrl-SysRq-b works and Ctrl-Alt-Backspace doesn't work.

I also noticed something special about this bug. I experienced the bug yesterday too but I noticed that one on my terminal windows wasn't freeze. It was pinging Google and the terminal didn't look like if it was freeze at all. I saw each answer from the Google servers in the terminal windows one by one like if it was working normally. However, I was still able to move my mouse but nothing was happening when I clicked somewhere. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace didn't work.

So maybe that this strange behaviour can give some clues about the bug! The X server doesn't look like being completely freeze.

I can confirm this behavior with latest update: computer ran fine after it until I left my computer for lunch.
When I came back, I found it "freezy" on the screensaver.

Rebooted (Ctrl+Alt+Print Sceen+B), used the computer for ten minutes and it freezed again when I resized a window.
No Avant-Window-Navigator running at all.

I was tracing syslog using ssh, here what the freeze gave me:
Oct 13 15:30:49 gromit kernel: [ 2326.662649] NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 26, Ch 000001ff M 00001ffc D ffffffff intr ffffffff

Then ssh server went down.

I pressed ctrl+alt+print screen+A: the computer "unfreezed" and I got the logs attached

I am also using the X700 under Gutsy and are sometimes experiencing this error and I suspect I could have something to do with one or more of the plugins for compiz. Right now I have overrided the blacklisting and are back on track, but I do fear the error will return.

Could you perhaps provide a list of what plugins you have active, since it does not crash in your cases? I might then try to rule out what plugins might cause the crashes.

I use the "Normal" effects setting from the Appearance dialog.

I identified that using aiglx was the problem for me. I switched back to
using xgl and everything is fine again. Thanks

I've switched back to xgl, but it didn't work for me, IT lasted something like 12 hours before de las freeze.
PLZ can anybody help us? it's a sham that the Radeon X300 card must be banned when on feisty compiz work like a clock.

I have the suspicion that it is the "Animations" plugin that causes the freeze when one of the effects are activated (perhaps some pointer goes spoink). If this is the case, then further investigation would be to identify which animation is to blame.

So far I have deactivated the animations plugin and it seems to go ok :-)

This makes a lot of sense, I will try to investigate this too with X300
in few days

That's an interesting observation. But then the problem would probably be visible with all video cards, since there is nothing specific to these cards in the plugin.
Oh, and while you're at it, can you also try with Animations enabled, but with focus effect set to "None" in settings manager?

Arngren (arngren) wrote :

That's true with the videocards that it should be common - but there must be something which is common for these few cards to cause the freeze (specific interface, buffer size perhaps etc.). I mean pointers in sw can make even the best code screw up - it's a long shot I admit it, but it's my best guess.

So far I have not had any freezes with the animations off, but I'll give it a try with the animations enabled and I assume you mean the "focus animation" effect inside the animations plugin should be cleared - at least that's what I have done :-)

Problem still persists in Gutsy 7.10 release. I have a Dell Optiplex GX280 with a VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 5B60 [Radeon X300 (PCIE)]. Enabling Extra desktop effects caused UI to lock up after an unspecified amount of time (usually within 10 minutes).

I disabled the animations plugin as suggested in this ticket. Lockups have NOT occurred for over a day.

A confirmed functional workaround seems to be to disable the animations plugin.

Scratch my above statement. All was fine for about a day. I logged in today (still w/ animations plugin disabled) and my display froze up as described in this ticket (mouse worked but I couldn't click anything....keyboard was unresponsive) shortly after I started working.

I disabled effects as this is my work machine. For what it is worth, I had compiz-fusion manually installed on Feisty for several months without a single incident on the same workstation.

Using the ATI commercial driver that one gets through Ubuntu repos cannot be used for Desktop Effects because when installed via the Restricted Drivers Manager it states when trying to activate Desktop Effects that "the composite extension is not available". So until now, I had to use the free Radeon xorg driver (which locks my desktop up).

However, on a whim I tried using Envy to install the latest commercial ATI driver. I did and I enabled desktop effects. There was no composite extension complaint. All went as expected. YAY!!

I've been using desktop effects (incl animations plugin) with this Envy installed commercial driver for my X300 for 2 days now with no hangs.

Hi,

Using latest radeon driver from Tuomod Volden's PPA on X600 XT (RV380), it works fine. I do have some freeze on gutsy while resizing nome-terminal.

After a bit more testing it appears that this might be a problem with Emerald, and not Compiz, because I've used Compiz with Metacity and had no more problems since yesterday....

i think i have the same problem. When i use emerald, system freezes in about 1 min. after startup. even mouse doesn't move. and i don't get any errors. but when i use gtk-window-decorator there is no problem. i am not sure that this is the right place to post this issue but sorry this is my first bug report. by the way i am using gutsy with latest updates and ati x500
