Odd "optional" label in "Mark as duplicate" form for bugs

On a form such as https:/
Does it mean that you can mark a bug as a duplicate without indicating which bug it's a duplicate of, and if so, would it perhaps make sense to add a link to a help page to explain in what scenarios this could be useful?
(I was too chicken to actually try this on a real bug, because I don't know if it's possible to revert. I am guessing the "(optional)" label is completely spurious, but if not, it's very unclear to me why not.)

Marking the bug as a duplicate will, by default, hide it from search results listings.

The field is, technically, optional, since Launchpad treats an empty field as an instruction to clear the duplicate bug ID and so un-mark the bug as a duplicate.
However, though the field is optional as far as the database is concerned, the (optional) label does make this confusing. There should perhaps be an instruction to the effect of "clear the field if you want to clear the dupe".
