Bug Description

Update from Bronto: "The same webcam with the same driver and the same version of Skype worked flawlessly in Debian. The same thing happened to Wengophone, that worked ok with that webcam until I switched to Ubuntu"
see: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/134285/comments/16

My Quickcam Web (046d:0850) does not work in Ubuntu. It also has a microphone inbuilt.

I have installed:
qc-usb-messeger-source
qc-usb-source
qc-usb-utils

lsusb: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 046d:0850 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Web

I have found this page: http://www.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de/~delwi/quickcam/
The Quickcam in the picture looks identical to mine

I've tried one of these, it doesn't seem to work.

The same thing happens (or actually, doesn't happen) with the QuickCam Communicate:

This is still not working for me (now using Gutsy Beta amd64).

I have tried using the camera in Ekiga and Cheese. In Ekiga the webcam light flashes a few times when I load it up but then the program crashes. Cheese just crashed and, like Ekiga, I have to do a 'Force Quit'

For those who have this working, can you tell me if you use V4L or V4L2....

Same webcam as you look ^^

I do use 32bit Gutsy, I don't personally recommend 64bit operating systems as they havn't matured enough in my opinion.

Hardy Heron Alpha2 was recently released. It contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha2 release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-2/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2 . I just completed a new install of Gutsy, 2.6.22-14 yesterday and all was working fine, including my Logitech web cam. I shut down the system and then booted it back up today and nothing but problems. Desktop locks, programs don't run or run slow and my web cam is always on (green LED) and is not recognized.
Reboot and remounting the cam does nothing.
Now I'm lost and I'm not really sure where the problem resides as nothing seems to be stable.

An update from my last post.
I uninstalled Camorama Web Cam Viewer and then reinstalled it. Now the Logictech cam works fine. I can also see it when running Kopete.
So, I'm back to where I was last night. Now lets see if it continues to work.

Hi Scott,

After attempting to use the camera, care to capture and attach your dmesg output. Just curious if any interesting error messages are being logged. Also, can you comment which version of the Hardy kernel you are running, 'cat /proc/version_signature'. Thanks.

Leann,

I updated my Hardy system using the update manager and I'm now using "Ubuntu 2.6.24-16.30-generic".

I then restarted and once gnome was loaded I plugged in the camera. I tried the camera on Ekiga but at first it didn't work as it was setup to use v4l2... I then switch to v4l and it detected the camera driver and it worked, for about 30 seconds!! Now I can't get Ekiga to load again (haven't restarted yet).

I also installed "cheese" but it didn't pick up the camera (maybe because v4l2 is default??).

I have attached a dmesg.log which I hope you can find the problem. I really appreciate your spending time to fix this bug.

Thanks
    Scott

An update to my last post...

I restarted the PC and now the camera works fine in Ekiga. I have to use v4l (and not v4l2 which ubuntu seems to think is the default the first time I try using it). Cheese still does not detect the camera. In skype 2.0 I tested the camera and it produced a ghosting image with blue/green lines across the picture.

I have not tried the microphone that is attached to the camera

Hello

I have a quickcam, as well, and it doesn't work with Skype, but maybe I found a new clue. It's like Skype it's reading the image in YUV format, despite the "torgb" setting of the driver.

Let me explain this one better.

This is the ID of the cam:

root@cooper:~# lsusb | grep -i quick
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:0850 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Web

and this are the current settings:
root@cooper:~# qcset -i
Name : Logitech QuickCam USB
Type : capture subcapture
Channels : 1
Audio devices : 0
Maxsize : 356,292
Minsize : 32,32

Overlay coords: 0,0
Capture size : 356,292
Chromakey : 0
Flags :

Channel : 0
Name : Camera
Tuners : 0
Flags :
Type : camera
Norm : 47097

Brightness : 32768
Hue : 32768
Color : 32768
Contrast : 32768
Whiteness : 32768
Depth : 24
Palette : RGB888 packed into 24bit words.

root@cooper:~# for OPTION in debug qcdebug keepsettings settle subsample compress frameskip quality adaptive equalize userlut retryerrors compatible video_nr ; do echo -n "$OPTION: " ; qcset "${OPTION}?" ; done
debug: common
qcdebug: common
keepsettings: n
settle: 0
subsample: n
compress: n
frameskip: 0
quality: best
adaptive: y
equalize: n
userlut: -1208520159
retryerrors: y
compatible: torgb
video_nr: -1

Now, using gqcam, setting RGB in the preferences and pushing "Apply", the image is ok (files: "Screenshot-gqcam - Logitech QuickCam USB.png" and "Screenshot-gqcam.png"). If I select YUV instead, and press "Apply", the resulting image is pretty similar to what you get in other programs, e.g.: skype.

Note also that the wecam started misbehaving right after I switched from Debian testing to Ubuntu 7.04, nearly one year ago. The same webcam with the same driver and the same version of Skype worked flawlessly in Debian. The same thing happened to Wengophone, that worked ok with that webcam until I switched to Ubuntu.

I hope this information is useful to catch the problem.

Ciao

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hello there

Sorry for being so late, but I was on holiday at first, and sick then :-(

No good news, unfortunately. I installed the new kernel and fired up
skype, then went in options->video devices and pressed the Test button.
Skype crashes. This happens deterministically, either if skype is still
setting up its connection or if the connection is already ok.

In case you need more info, just let me know.

My (046d:0850) QuickCam Web still does not work with Intrepid Beta Live-CD (amd64).

Looking at the list (http://lwn.net/Articles/291036/) of webcams that were included in the 2.6.27 kernel, 046d:0850 was not included.

Does anyone know someone we can contact to point out this missing driver?

As of intrepid the qc-usb driver does not seem to work anymore, but there is a patch in this bugreport:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/268134

I've also written a short instruction how to compile the qc-usb driver with this patch without having to compile the whole kernel:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/196811/comments/32
(Step 4 and 7 are only required if you want to use the cam with cheese, too)

If you get your cam working this way, please comment on and confirm #268134

Here's some packages given by the Ultimate Ed. Forum. Using Synaptic install these. Note, a lot of these are already installed for video apps. Just use the search function. You may not find "uvcdynctrl" , but my Skype works great although I couldn't find it. Install all the ones with green check marks. I use Logitech Quick Cam. Hope this helps. Only thing I found that works. Also worked for Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger. There's two pages so have to post twice.

Scott Hosking, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
