Pending resolution of the bug I found an accidental solution... I don't know if it helps bug resolution.
Since I don't have any Output Card listed in Audo Settings, executing alsa_setup.sh (from http://
Then running these commands audio from speakers is working until shutdown:
sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel
sudo alsa force-reload <--for 3 times but waiting 10-15 seconds between one and the other
This is a very strange workaround, but it work for me!

Same on Ubunto 16.04 Daily Build (4.3.0-2-generic #11-Ubuntu SMP Fri Dec 4). The bug report is "incomplete" - what can I do to make it complete or to help to fix it?

My two cents,
you have some recent hardwares but use quite old kernel. Your issue is expected, and the solution is to use recent release/kernel with recent hardware.
Either dist-upgrade (or better do a fresh install to avoid possible settings conflict disturbing the system) to at least wily or xenial (which smoothly works, even if its a development work still on going, blah blah ...); or test trusty + kernel 4.3 if you are afraid by the previous proposal.

Thanks for your response, dino99. But same with 4.4.0-040400rc6

More comment:
Pulseaudio strictly now needs:
- 'hda' bios setting (not ac97)
- jacks correctly plugged as expected: aka, strict same colors
then check the sound config/settings (via pavucontrol/

I have installed ubuntu 15.10 and ran the solution proposed by Simone, see
below, and that worked! It is indeed a strange workaround, but it works. I
hope it'll work properly when ubuntu 16.04 arrives.

I have a brand new HP 440 G3 (Not 470) and it does exactly the same problem. I can confirm that the workaround that instructs you to use stchman's alsa_setup.sh and make 3 force-reloads of alsa works!! But it is still a very ugly workaround.
I am on Ubuntu Gnome 15.10 using mainline 4.4-rc8 kernel.

Thomas Giesel (skoe) wrote : | #18 |
Today I added some debug output to 4.4-rc8. That's what I got so far:
When the codec probing fails, it takes exactly a bit more than 5 seconds from sending the verb
[ 394.482417] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: snd_hdac_
to getting:
[ 399.524257] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: spurious response 0x14f150f4:0x0, last cmd=0x0f0000
When it works, after reloading a few time, the probing looks well:
[ 798.042375] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: bound 0000:00:02.0 (ops i915_audio_
[ 798.055895] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: codec_mask = 0x5
[ 798.057519] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: snd_hdac_
[ 798.057525] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: azx_rirb_
[ 798.057578] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: codec #0 probed OK
[ 798.057580] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: snd_hdac_
[ 798.057583] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: azx_rirb_
[ 798.057615] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: codec #2 probed OK
I'm just starting to understand the code. If somebody with a better background has some advice what could be useful to try, post it here or ping "skoe" at freenode/
btw: I'm quite sure that the script alsa_setup.sh has nothing to do with the issue, but the force-reload is sufficient.

I also have a HP 430 G3, on Ubuntu 15.10, kernel 4.2.0-23. Same issue (no sound).
Above solution from Simone (14-12-2015) failed to work for me.
But the following does work and has the advantage of persisting.
1. Create a new modprobe.d file:
/etc/modprobe.
2. Add these entries:
options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
3. reboot.

Simone (ulric-x) wrote : | #20 |
Many thanks to Andy (and Bas), it works for me!!!
But with alsa_setup.sh already executed earlier. I don't know if the script is important with regard to the solution.

Hi!
I have Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with kernel 3.19.0-25 installed in a HP Probook 430 G3. When I finished the installation, the sound doesn't works.
I followed the Andy C instructions and it works. I didn't use the alsa_setup.sh script.
-I only put this lines in /etc/modprobe.
options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
options snd-hda-intel model=basic
But when I reboot the laptop (not halt or poweroff), before Ubuntu starts, a very strong noise appears. At every reboot this noise appears.
-I corrected this problem, I just put the next line in /etc/modprobe.
options snd-hda-intel power_save=0
Now, I've updated the kernel to 3.19.0-47 and the strong noise appears again.
I've tried to solve adding another option to the file:
options snd-hda-intel power_save_
But doesn't works....
I've read the kernel documentation pages about ALSA but I haven't find the solution

Has someone an idea to resolve this issue?
Thanks to all!

I have Ubuntu 15.10 with kernel 4.2.0-25-generic on HP ProBook G3 installed. I have executed alsa setup earlier and it worked sometimes. Adding the lines proposed by Andy fixed the sound issue even after reboot. Although the strong noise issue arose.
Actually, it did happen SOMETIMES even earlier, when I tried for use the alsa force, but now it's 100% reproducible.
Also I wanna mention, that this sound appears even before I select the OS to boot, so it must be some bios configuration problem or whatever. I tried googling it, but did not succeed at all.
How can I help in the bug investigation?
I tried running ubuntu-bug audio, it starts playing beeps through my speakers. First time it goes well, but the second time it hangs forever.

Running it is a binary event in that either one does it, or doesn't. In this case, it wasn't as per https:/
However, I'll adjust future request comments to clear that up. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Hi!
I think I've resolved the strong noise at rebooting.
I entered into BIOS setup -> Advanced and I enabled an option called "Intel Smart Sound". Save changes and Exit.
Now, when I reboot, there is no noise.

Thanks to Andy and Baz! Sound now works on (hp probook 430)Ubuntu 15.10 default kernel 4.2 without alsa_setup.sh script
Adrian (adrian-rosian) wrote : | #30 |
ArnauC, what is your final configuration with regards to the alsa conf settings? I have also a G3, but the Smart sound setting in bios didn't seem to have any impact on the loud noise
ArnauC (arnauc) wrote : | #31 |
Hi Adrian,
I only modified the /etc/modprobe.
options snd-hda-intel power_save=0
options snd-hda-intel power_save_
options snd-hda-intel model=basic
options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
And then I changed the BIOS configuration, as I said.
This only two steps. I hope this can help you!

Hi ArnauC,
I did the same steps as you (also have the same exact model) but the noise is not completely gone. It it somewhat better. The noise appears for 1-2 seconds.

i have the exact same problems using my hp probook 440 g3, which has obviously quite the same or similar sound card. i just reinstalled windows, because i am worried by the sound that my speakers do while booting. but i have ubuntu still installed on usb stick and can give you any log output you wanna have. pls just write me the terminal commands you need.

before i saw this bug thread i found another ( http://
options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
with these lines a was able to get sound, but i then have these crazy noises while booting.
i just post some lines from the terminal which might help:

i dont know what to add anymore. feel free to ask.

ArnauC's solution partially worked for me on my HP ProBook 470 G3. The noise is still there in it's full duration but it's volume is much lower, it's barely audible now.

Adrian (adrian-rosian) wrote : | #37 |
ArnauC, on my HP ProBook 440 G3 I tried your full solution, the loud noise is still there. I can only assume that some BIOS configuration is different. Could you please give me a full list of your BIOS options in the same category as the Intel Smart Sound option?

Support for this codec was added in kernel v4.1
The strange sounds during reboot/shutdown were solved in mainline since v4.6-rc1

Hi Christopher,
Sorry, I'm not sure I undertand your question. Are you asking if a kernel
update addressed my issues?
I installed Ubuntu 15.10 and tried the fix suggested by Simone on
14-12-2015, this worked for me. I am planning to install 16.04 in a couple
of months and hope the sound issue is solved in this release.
I hope this answers your question. Otherhise, please ask.
Kind regards,
Ronald
