Bug Description

Binary package hint: fretsonfire

The FretsOnFire version installed from the repos is really slow, nearly unplayable, and doesn't have the rights fonts, whereas the version downloader from fretsonfire.sf.net is fast and has no problems.

Both are v1.2.451.

I've got the problem on my laptop, which uses the fglrx video driver for its ATI X1600. I couln'd test on any other computers.

I have this problem too. Downloaded version is fine, the one on repos is much too slow.
My laptop has a Intel 950GM graphic adapter.

These were the same version? You were compiling the version from the website?

Yeah, same problem for me. The downloaded version runs perfectly, but the version I got from Synaptic runs painfully slow, and doesn't even play many of the tracks correctly.

Any chance the version in the package manager can be updated? This is a great game, and "just install it from the website" isn't really a satisfactory answer. If the version in the package manager doesn't work, it should either be updated or removed.

The same version (binary) from the website work without problem.
Nevertheless, when trying to compile from the original source, I discovered that cx_freeze is needed to make binaries. As it does seem to be not available in ubuntu, the ubuntu package only contains the source .py files, which can be used directly, but are much slower. That's why the game is so slow.

The solution would be to package cx_freeze to ubuntu, then use it to build FretsOnFire

Same here , I didnt test the upstream version though

I suspect I was compiled with a "software" 3D rendering lib ...

Fretsonfire 1.2.512.dfsg-3 is now in Intrepid. Could you please test if the problem still exists in this latest version? Thanks in advance.

I couldn't test on intrepid, but using the intrepid package under hardy seemed to solve the problem.

Hew, I'm using Intrepid and Fretsonfire version 1.2.512.dfsg-3. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1500 (Core2Duo 1.73GHz, 2GB RAM, Intel 945GM graphics .. I don't think it lacks specs to play frets on fire). It is incredibly slow. The menu system is fine, I can move around at normal speed but once the game starts, it's impossible to play.

As per the others, the download version is playable while the one from the repos is not. What surprised me is that I can only play the download version at 640x480. Anything higher makes it unbearably slow. Is it normal that a game this "simple" requires so many resources to run?

Reopening due to the above comment. Do you know what is causing the slowness? Is it high CPU usage, or something else?

I switched to a console and the python process appeared to be consuming close to 100% CPU. Not sure if this helps, but I ran glxgears and I got 200 FPS. Let me know if you need any more info and I'll be happy to provide it.

Hew,

It turns out my system had hardware rendering disabled (due to the massive screen resolution that went beyond what was allowed for DRI to work ... intel 945GM chipset). Once I got hardware rendering back, the repos version works fine. For some reason, I can't run the download version but since the repos version works fine, I'm not too fussed :)
