Bug Description

Binary package hint: postgis

Hardy includes postgresql-8.3 but no postgis package for it. It looks like the package is completed: http://www.nabble.com/Postgresql-8.3-postgis-td15914434.html

Since hardy is a LTS release, it would be very nice if this could slip in.

I would like to second this wish... PostgreSQL 8.3 has some very good new features but I can't really make use of them, because I need also the PostGIS-Package. To compile by myself would be possible, but is I think only a sub-optimal solution...the package would be better, specially in regard to LTS.

Thank you!

I would like to third this. If this package doesn't make it into Hardy we're going to have to run PostgreSQL 8.2 for quite some time.

If somebody would file a Feature Freeze exception (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreezeExceptionProcess) we can maybe get this in. We want to pull in 1.3.2-2 from Debian. I think we should shoot for it.

Hi everybody,

Let's get this feature freeze exception in.

The PPA was able to successfully build the package, so here's the build log:

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/13295635/buildlog_ubuntu-hardy-i386.postgis_1.3.2-2~ppa0_FULLYBUILT.txt.gz

The packages should be available in my PPA in a few minutes, could everyone subscribed to this bug please test it as soon as possible?

In accordance to the FreezeExceptionProcess document linked by Jordan, I'll subscribe ubuntu-release to this bug. I believe that all other information is already on here, with the exception of a diffstat. I'll try to post that in a bit, as soon as I figure out how to properly generate one (help would be appreciated).

Thanks.

Hello everybody,

I just installed the package provide by Eric, imported spatial_ref_sys.sql and lwpostgis.sql and imported via QGIS (SPIT) three Shape-Files into the database, it all worked flawlessly!
Further testing will follow :-)

A big thanks to Eric for that,
best wishes from Austria,
Albin

postgis is in universe, so this freeze exception request needs to go through motu-release rather than ubuntu-release. Passing it over to them.

I've installed the packages that Eric mentioned and they seem to work well although I'm having trouble with the ST_Simplify function - when I try to use it, its returning my geom's as an empty object (No errors):

SRID is 4326

SQL: select ST_AsText(ST_Simplify(electorate_geom, 500)), ST_AsText(electorate_geom) from electorates where gid=1

| st_astext | electorate_geom |
| MULTIPOLYGON EMPTY | MULTIPOLYGON(((175.20387850693 -36.5949382294311,175.266628030412 -36.7038476734099, etc |

Can anyone else confirm this?

James Doherty (james-doherty) wrote :

After investigating my issue a bit further I found that the problem was because I reprojected my original source data from 27200 to 4326 using PostGIS and stored it in a column in my db. When I tried to simplify the stored reprojected data, ST_Simplify returned an empty multipolygon. If I use ST_Simplify on my original data then it works absolutely fine. I can now recommend that these packages be put into Hardy if possible.

Hey Scott, looks like you accidentally un-confirmed the bug.

Anyway, it doesn't sound like this is going to happen because hardy is in "FinalFreeze" status. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FinalFreeze

Could someone on the MOTU team please confirm this?

Unconfirming wasn't accidental. Confirmed means approved by motu-release.
Please put it back.

setting back to new, as there is no decision about the FFe yet. (You won't get one, if you won't leave the bug as new, as then no other member of motu-release will look at this one).

I just built the current Debian package on current Ubuntu Hardy and confirm that the package builds, installs, and works correctly. I created a test DB and exercised some PostGIS specific table creation/data insertion/querying.
