I have solved the freezes with my Intel graphics card by adding the ForceEnablePipeA option to xorg.conf. I have tested with that option for about a month, and no other similar freeze has happened.
I'm running a HP Pavilion ze4944ea, with the following graphics card:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device [8086:3582] (rev 02)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:3084]
