Bug Description

ok so when ubuntu loads it freezes and the caps lock indicator flashes.
text only mode outputs: Kernel Panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler! ---then dies

when i first installed hardy hardin 64 bit i had this problem. even from booting off livecd. 32 bit ran fine.
i installed/ran intrepid ibex alpha 4 for like 3/4 weeks, until there was some sort of kernel update on ~august 30, which reintroduced the problem into intrepid ibex

the whole problem I posted here before i tried initially installing intrepid: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/42508

when grub now boots, it has 3 more options: the standard boot, recovery mode, and last successful boot---- except that its with a different kernel version. (i assume installed from the update.

the new kernel version: 2.6.27-2, is the default and fries my comp when booted from.
the old kernel: 2.6.26-5, you have to manually select, after which it boots fine.

how can i get the new kernel version to work, and why isn't it?

Confirming this bug. Setting as high importance since it has a severe impact on a small (estimated) portion of Ubuntu users.

At about the same time as the bug reporter, I got this kernel panic on Ubuntu Intrepid 64-bit. However, I can successfully boot into my system if I reset the computer one or two times.

Though I never experienced this problem on Ubuntu 8.04, the bug for which the reporter was referring to is Bug #196046.

I'm going to try setting the default Grub settings to an older kernel and see what happens.

FYI: my above comment is regarding kernel 2.6.27-4

I confirm that I do not have these kernel panics on startup with kernel 2.6.26-5 as the bug reporter has stated.

I will test several times with kernel 2.6.27-5 (released in Ubuntu on October 2nd) and report if I have these problems.

The kernel panics were gone with the 2.6.27-5 kernel that was released in Ubuntu about a week ago. However, the 2.6.27-6.9 kernel released in Ubuntu about 3 days ago was a regression and brought back the kernel panics. Since kernel 2.6.27-7.10 was released in Ubuntu today, I will test with this new kernel and see if the bug still exists or is fixed.

This is a generic error message that is almost certainly a secondary symptom of whatever caused the system to fail to boot. Can you please provide the lines displayed /before/ this one when the boot fails?

I confirm the bug for kernel 2.6.27-7.11 (the bug might have been fixed in 2.6.27-7.10, though). I will test later with kernel 2.6.27-7.12.

@Steve
As the kernel panics don't appear on any logs (I assume it is too early to be logged since the kernel hasn't accessed the filesystem yet), I will get back with the previous lines later.

Can anyone please recommend me a temporary fix or an option to add onto the kernel when starting up?

Because of this, I cannot use any type of linux-based OS on my laptop--only windows.

Random versions of the Ubuntu kernel work (about 1/6 of them), but then on the next distribution upgrade, the kernel update frys my laptop.

I really need a temporary fix, because right now I'm unable to run linux. Period.

Please help me because I don't really know what to do at this point beside sell this laptop and buy a different model that is un-glitched.

Before the kernel panic occurs while Ubuntu is booting, press Alt-F1 to see a verbose list of messages scroll. Please state the last few messages before the kernel panic occurs

The alt-f1 didn't do anything (at all), so i just took a couple pictures with my digital camera of the largest pauses of it loading..

Everything goes fine before screenshot one (no visible errors).

1st one is while squashfs begins loading.
2nd is ubuntu starts "Loading hardware drivers", and briefly pauses at ath_pci, which spits out some gibberish
3rd is about half a second after the 2nd, when the kernel panic occurs (caps lock flashes indicating panic), and the computer spits out pages of randomness instantly.

this is with the latest stable release of Ibex 8.10 x64 bit
the actual errors are different between each version of ubuntu, with ibex it does not say "Kernel Panic--Killing Interupt handler..". I am also booting without the options splash and quiet so the errors can be viewed.

from googling, i found out someone had a similar problem with this exact same CQ50 110US laptop--http://forums.remote-exploit.org/showthread.php?t=16887, except with bt3. (as i said before, i can't run any linux based OS on this laptop, including BT3). He said he used the ucpi=off option, which didn't do anything for me (i haven't even heard of ucpi before).

snapshots are in .zip
thanks again for all the help

i believe you are experiencing a different bug, that by chance was also introduced by the same kernel update to 2.6.27-2. you said that if you tried several times, the system would boot properly, which is not the case for me--it has never booted once on one of the "evil" kernels.

for me, the last kernel that worked properly was 2.6.26-5 in ibex alpha4. since then, every version of ubuntu i have downloaded from the website (even ibex 8.10 stable) has been subjected to the crashing.

my only solution is to remain using 6 month(-ish) old kernel, and try a new kernel every month or so, until the problem fixes itself indirectly, through periodical code changes. i guess a 6 month outdated kernel for ubuntu is better than a 6 year outdated infrastructure by using XP.

thanks again for all the help--it seems as if i'm the only one experiencing the bug, and unfortunality i lack the knowledge to diagnose & fix it manually. the one thing that annoys me most is that there is probably one little "evilkernel=off" option to apphend while booting--but i just don't know what it is..

Shea,

There is in fact nothing here linking *your* reported problem to that of the original reporter. The trace in your third screenshot points to a problem with the ath_pci driver. I would suggest that you file a separate bug report against the linux-restricted-modules package with a copy of your screenshots.
