Bug Description

On Dapper:

Delete a file from your home folder. Open the trash. The trash is empty. The file you deleted does not show.

OTOH, if you enter ~/.Trash, you can see the file. If you right click it, the option "delete from trash" appears, and you can delete it.

The trashcan is clearly malfunctioning. It has been like this for one or two few days.

However, this only happens for files deleted in the root partition. If I delete a file on a another partition, say mounted to /win1, the file appears in the thrashcan. (and in /win1/.Trash-myname of course).

Thanks for your bug. Do you use the real trash from nautilus or the applet from the panel?

I use both the trash applet and the "File -> empty trash" menu option in nautilus. They suffer from the same problem.

I also tried "go->trashcan" in nautilus. Same problem.

What filesystem do you use? How do you delete the file? Using the applet? Pressing "suppr"? Using the menu?

The root filesystem is ext3. The other partitions (whose trashcan works correctly) are reiser3, ext3, fat32.

I delete files either by dragging them to the trashcan applet, or by right-clicking and choosing "move to trash".

I too am experiencing this bug on a machine dist-upgraded from a fresh breezy install. Curiously, I have not had the problem at home which (I think I remember correctly that) was a fresh Hoary install and was dist-upgraded to Breezy and subsequently to Dapper.

If you need any more information, I'd be happy to assist where I can.

Regards

Does it happen when moving a local file to the trash or one from an another box or disk?

What do you mean by "local"? Anyway, I have two disks and 5 partitions:

/dev/hda3 on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
/dev/hda5 on /old-ubuntu type reiserfs (rw)
/dev/hda6 on /dat type ext3 (rw)
/dev/hda1 on /win1 type vfat (rw,umask=002)
/dev/hdc5 on /win2 type vfat (rw,umask=002)
/dev/hdc1 on /backup type ext3 (rw)

The problem only happens for the root partition (hda3). hda5, hda6, and hdc* are ok.

No, I cannot.

Your bug is not clear. You say that it doesn't work on hda3 but that you can't delete from hda3 ... so how is that a bug from the trash? You just don't have the permission to trash from the partition so the trash stay empty

seguso (maurizio-colucci) wrote :

There was a misunderstanding. You asked me if I can delete a file in the / directory on hda3. I said no: I don't have rights. Only root has them.
But I _can_ delete from /home/mau, which is also on hda3. If I do that, the bug happens.

If I left-click and "move to trash" any file in my file system it does not appear in the trash. It does however appear in home/myname/.trash if I use the command line interface. It started happening when I upgraded from Breezy to Dapper and has not stopped. I am patched current as of 5-27-06. I notice this in the Gnome desktop. The only difference I can think of b/t this machine and the laptop I have where this works properly is that I used "easy ubuntu" to add some non-free stuff like flash, video card divers, java, video codecs, etc. That's about the only differences I can think of. Would be glad to answer any other questions you have.

Hi, could you elaborate on that? How is this bug different from the duplicate?

It sounds as if it could be the same. When I first read bug 35565 it
missinterpeted it.

This might be an important hint.

I have been able to reproduce the bug as follows.

Install edgy. Choose american english in the installation. Use edgy normally for a few days. Delete a file from a partition other than /, so that a folder .Trash-username is created on that partition. Let's call that partition P.

Then, install language support (system -> administration). Install italian language support. Log out and, in gdm, change the language to italian before loggin in. When asked if this should be your default language, choose yes.

Now that you are logged in with the italian language, go to the partition which we called P, and delete a file with nautilus. Then, with nautilus, enter the trashcan (menu -> go -> trash, which in italian is Menu - >Vai -> Cestino). You will notice the trashcan looks empty, instead of containing the deleted file. Now, with nautilus, show hidden files and navigate to the .Trash-username folder. The deleted file does appear there.

So the trashcan bug might be related to localization in some way.
