Bug Description

I have a dual boot system with windows 7 and kubuntu 9.10 alpha 3. I can only boot in Karmic and there is no menu.lst file in /boot/grub directory so there are no menu entries. All updates till now are installed except of some blocked.

It's called /boot/grub/grub.cfg now that we use GRUB 2. Can you describe the actual problem that you encountered in more detail?

  Specifically while booting the system I used to see the grub menu ;
the problem now is that it seems to be no grub menu. The result is that
ubuntu karmic boots up immediately. I also want to add that just before
ubuntu boots up I can see a message but its impossible to reach to read
it. So I installed kgrubeditor and tried to add the windows entry but
when I run the program a message appears saying: no /boot/grub/menu.lst
file .
There is also a possibility that it might be a conflict in my disc's
mbr. So it might be my own fault.
Sorry for the inconvenience in case this isn't a bug.

I am running 32 bit Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on my sda1 partition. It uses grub (menu.lst).

Yesterday I installed the 64 bit Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic on a 40GB partition, sda5. It uses grub2 (grub.cfg).

On my Karmic side, when I run "Systemsettings --> Advanced --> Grub Editor" it complains that "/boot/grub/menu.lst does not exist!", so the Grub Editor can not configured /boot/grub/grub.cfg for grub2.

When I try to use the "Help --> Report Bug" I get a dialog which has in the title "Invalid problem report - Apport KDE", and an "Ok" button to close the dialog. No report is sent.

It doesn't show the menu because you didn't read my posting to ubuntu-devel-announce ;-) In general you should be subscribed to ubuntu-devel-announce if you're running a development release.

There are already other bugs filed about this, and I'll be making things a bit more graceful before 9.10 releases, I hope.

kgrubeditor clearly needs to be fixed to cope with GRUB 2. This is not GRUB 2's fault. It'll need more than just a filename change - the whole menu structure is different now.

Please note that kgrubeditor is not officially supported, and was rejected for main inclusion for other quality problems (see bug 262309).

Indeed, this is more of a feature request [GRUB2 support]. Why was it marked as a "*High* Importance" bug?

Steve Langasek (vorlon) wrote :

It's marked as high importance because grub2 is the default boot loader in karmic. So the "feature" being requested is for kgrubeditor to be usable in Ubuntu 9.10.

Given that this package has a history of not working with the GRUB menu in Ubuntu, I wonder if it wouldn't be better to remove it until it can be fixed.

OK, removed. For now, you're better off editing /etc/default/grub directly, and running 'sudo update-grub' afterwards; it's quite a simple text file.

You probably should poke upstream, last time i talked to him he mentioned
that he is going to look at grub2 support. That was sone time ago, so it
might already be wip.

Upgrading from 9.4 to 9.1 has messed up my dual boot. Just discovered cannot boot my XP install on this machine the suggestion to edit /etc/default/grub does not work for me no such file exists to edit. Also when creating an upgrade that changes something as fundamental as how the machine boots to something not backwards compatible a BIG RED warning notice should be made prior to any install. this has rendered half my machine useless and will take days of google research on how to manually fix the result of this upgrade.

The comments above say that a fix for the Kgrubeditor to handle Grub2 is available. How do we get it?
