Bug Description

1. Kubuntu installation include download of additional language-packages after install completed. I think if Internet connection available installer must download and install language packages during installation, but text-mode installer not do this.
2. Even language package is installed (from DVD or from Internet, if user use disktop-cd for installation), installed language not selected, and user must go to System configuration, and select system language by hands (just like in comment 10)

Thanks for taking the time to share your opinion!

Also can someone from the ubuntu bug team set this to wishlist status?

I think it's a bug. Let's see:
1. User select language twice (in BootCD loader and in system installer)
2. System installed, but the language that was selected. not installed properly (not all packages of this language is installed).

What is it, if not a bug?

affects: kubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) → ubiquity (Ubuntu)

This is fixed in Ubuntu, and will be fixed in Kubuntu once they move to the new ubiquity-based greeter.

No, I mean not that. I mean user made it clear what language they want to install, but this language is not installed completely.

summary: - Kubuntu installation include download of additional language-packages
- after install completed
+ Ubuntu and Kubuntu installation include download of additional language-
+ packages after install completed

Hello, NeuroMancer

How do you imagine to hold all necessary langpacks on one CD? Your analogy with Windows installation not consistent, since Windows distro is 'one-language'. Ubuntu try to hold as much primary langpacks as possible on 700 Mb of CD space.

Please read bug description carefully - I propose downloading of all needed packages for full support for the language wich was chosen by the user, but if Internet available.

As idea for wishlist I think it not bad. But need some specification - for example - 'Internet' at all too wide term. Somebody could have 56k at huge prices even in our 100Mbps space speed age. So it need to be selectable. And because of that - I personally don't see a sense whether it would be after installation or in time of it.

For experienced user there is no difference, but now is time to become more attuned to the typical windows user.

Evan, it's not a wish, it's a bug.

I test Russian installation with Kubuntu Lucid Beta 2 with Internet connection and get this result:
1. After installation location correcty selected - Russia, but language list is empty. Until user add Russian language to list, system partly in Russian, partly in English.
2. After user add Russian language to list appears windows with request to complete install language support for selected (Russian) languages and download additional packageges.

You see, it's not just a wish, it's a bug.

Is this installer you are talking about the Installer on the Live CD that installs Kubuntu, or the Language Selection installer that's available from System Settings?

I can reproduce this with a Dutch installation:
1. At the boot menu, choose Nederlands (or any language which is not shipped on the CD)
2. "Try Ubuntu..." and make sure internet is available
3. run the installer -> installer is in Dutch, like expected
4. install the system, the installer seems to pull all necessary packages off the net
5. reboot
6. the system is partly translated in Dutch, partly English
7. open system control panel -> region/language settings. The Region is correctly set to Nederlands, but the languagelist is empty. The user needs to add the language (Dutch) from the Add Language combobox manually. After that the system is fully translated.

However, when network is not available during installation and the user reboots for the first time, after connecting to the internet a message should appear to ask the user to install the missing packages. The dialog is shipped with language-selector-common, but is not shown to the user. We had a similar issue with ubiquity on the Gnome desktop, which has been fixed some time ago already.

Well, the wording is a bit off there. It logically affects kubuntu-meta, it technically however does not ;)

It is no issue in kubuntu-meta itself, but in ubiquity (apparently), it only manifests in Kubuntu installations. Hence while it logically affects kubuntu-meta, it technically only affects ubiquity, hence tracking it in kubuntu-meta is wrong.

Is this still an issue in Kubuntu? Has this move to the ubiquity-based greeter been done?

I test this issue again with new daily build (13 September) of Ubuntu.

Installation launched in LiveCD mode - Internet connection is definitely working (I check twice it using Firefox - before installation and while installtion).
When installation is completed and system boot up I not see any localization.

I sure Kubuntu have exactly same ubiquity now (in Maverick release), and then still have same problem.

I can confirm the phenomenon that RussianNeuroMancer is describing when installing current Natty (at least Alpha) with German localization. The user sadly has to 'install and switch to' German, after the installation of Natty is complete - though the user already specified that he/she wants a e.g. German 'system'.

Either the status of this bug against ubiquity or debian-installer has to be changed to 'confirmed' please.

Thanks.

Ideally, with a set of steps to reproduce it.
