Bug Description

Binary package hint: debian-installer

When selecting English as the preferred language and Norway as the country, I get a message stating that no locale is defined for the combination of language and country.
I am then presented a list where I am able to select different English locales but not the Norwegian locale.

Tested on ubuntu-11.04-beta1-alternate-amd64.iso

tags: added: beta1 install locale natty norwegian

This does not sound like a bug. English is not an official language in Norway, so there is indeed nothing like an en_NO locale. What you should do instead is to start with English/UK or Norwegian/Norway, and after the installation use the language selector to select English as language, and Norwegian for time/date/etc. formats.

summary: - No locale defined for English language while selecting Norway as contry
- (Natty beta1)
+ Allow selecting a different $LC_MESSAGES and $LANG

Updated bug status/title to reformulate this as a wishlist bug. Colin, feel free to close as wontfix, of course.

The one part I see as unfortunate is that following a mismatch like this you don't get the opportunity to select *_NO as well as en_* locales.

affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu) → localechooser (Ubuntu)

It is not uncommon to use a different language than the official language(s) in your current country. Especially english on server installations, since you don't get many hits if you search for a Norwegian error message on Google. Or you may live in another country for some time, and want the operating system display in your language, but use the local currency/time/date/number/etc.

This is not a problem on other operating systems, like Windows and OS X, so please fix this in Ubuntu as well in the next version or in an update.
