Bug Description

Hi! I've just updated unbuntu from Dapper Drake. So, on my laptop and on some computers of my friends this error occured. The contact list cannot display contacts with russian symbols correctly. I think it's a problem with encoding. Conversations work properly (russian symbols displayed correctly). In Dapper Drake all was fine. My system is up to date.

Yes, it was dapper. Then (a couple weeks ago) I ran 'sudo apdate-manager
-c'. Help said that for now it is Edgy Eft 6.10

PS: Actually, I don't understand what protocol is?

I confirm this bug.

Incorrect encoding happens in buddy aliases in ICQ (oscar).

All russian-speaking users set one-byte-encoding of oscar to cp1251 for compatibility reasons. And broken encoding looks exactly like UTF-8 string treated as cp1251 and converted to UTF-8.

steps to reproduce:

- create ICQ account and set encoding to cp1251
- set any buddy alias to "Друг" for example
- restart gaim
- see that this buddy is shown as "Друг"

the problem with ICQ is bug #74722 and should be fixed with the feisty version, you can try the package from http://people.ubuntu.com/~seb128/gaim-edgy on edgy i386 if you want to confirm that
