Bug Description

Platform: VirtualBox 4.0.12 r72916 on Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.38-11 generic
OS: [Kubuntu] oneiric-desktop-i386.iso (Beta 1 20110831)

Preconditions:
- Create a machine for Ubuntu in VirtualBox and add 2 hard drives
  - HDD1: SATA0, 15 GB
  - HDD2: SATA1, 4 GB (on the same SATA controller as HDD1)

Steps to reproduce:
1) Start machine with Live CD present
2) Select "Start Kubuntu"
3) Select "Install Kubuntu"
4) Click "Forward" to get to the disk partition options
5) Click on the drop down list under "Manual"

Expected result:
- Both hard drives available in the list

Actual Result:
- Only the second (smaller) hard drive is available
Note: If selecting "Manual", both hard drives are available, so it seems like it's ubiquity that only sees one hard drive, but the partition editor sees both.

ProblemType: Bug

I'm slightly confused by your description. You say that the second hard drive doesn't appear under "Manual" but then you say, "If selecting "Manual", both hard drives are available."

Evan, I think he means that only one hard drive is visible in the drop-down on the autopartitioning screen - it's fairly clear from the screenshot.

I wonder if this has something to do with the auto-resize option being selected at the time?

Sorry Evan, I missed your comment above. Anyway, Colin is correct, the drop down list only contains one hard drive (my reference to "Manual" here was because that's the location of the drop down box on the screen, sorry if that made it confusing).

Even though the drop down box only contains one hard drive, selecting manual configuration will show both hard drives.

Exact same setup using kvm/libvirt shows both disks in the overview and in manual (two 1TB drives on the same controller).
Tested with today's Kubuntu i386 desktop image.

Will retry with Virtualbox specifically now using the same disks and iso.

Just tried in VirtualBox now (using virtualbox from the archive on Oneiric).

A setup with 2 8GB drives attached to one controller (default config) with a VM setup as Ubuntu 32bit with 412MB of RAM (I used an old laptop for virtualbox testing) correctly shows up as both sda and sdb in the auto partitioning drop down and in Manual partitioning.

Can you try and reproduce with the same ISO image I'm using? http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20110930/oneiric-desktop-i386.iso

My virtualbox version was 4.1.2-dfsg-1ubuntu1, I unfortunately don't have any physical system still running lucid around to check with the exact same virtualbox and OS version as you have.

Sorry, the http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20110930/oneiric-desktop-i386.iso is no longer available. However, I tried with the latest image I have. I used zsync to synchronize the image: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/oneiric-desktop-i386.iso on Mon Oct 3 12:40:01 CST 2011. With this image, I still see the same problem.

I'm attaching the Virtual Box machine definition file in case it helps.

I also just tried to download the following image and got the same result: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20111002/oneiric-desktop-amd64.iso

Actually, I think I just figured out why I see this behavior. It appears I forgot one crucial piece of information in the bug report; the larger disk is not empty, in fact it's almost full from a previous test, I forgot to erase that data. I also missed that the first option is the "resize" option, not "use entire disk" (for some reason I just assumed it would be "use entire disk"), but since the larger drive cannot be resized, it only shows the smaller drive.

So it seems this is not a bug after all, it's just me not reading carefully enough. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Stéphane Graber (stgraber) wrote :

Ok, so you confirm that when selecting the "use entire disk" option, the drop-down then shows both disks?

If that's the case, I'll just go ahead and mark the bug invalid.

Yes, I can confirm that both drives are available when selecting "use entire disk"

Great, that's one less bug to fix then :)
