Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

The installation completes but when I come to start the machine it fails. As soon as it loads the kernel its quickly flashes something (hex I think, it only lasts about 1/2 sec) and reboots.

I've tried installing with the dapper net install CD, same problem. Edgy server install also has the same problems. Fiesty net cd works fine though (installs a 386 kernel)

I'll attach the cpuinfo in a moment, but is there anything else you'd like?

Here is the info on the machine. It currently has Debian 3.1_r4 i386 installed.

If you can manage to get a digital camera snap of the screen just before it reboots, or something similar, that might be helpful ...

I tried the Dapper Alt CD last night and then installed fine and loads the newly install kernel correctly. I'll post the kernel name tonight since I'm at work and I forgot to install ssh-server.

I got a similar problem, but without flashes.

Installing a Dapper Drake i386 Server Edition on a VIA EPIA M10000 goes fine, but at the first reboot the kernel hangs just after the "Uncompressing linux.... Ok, booting the kernel" line.
I tried stripping "quiet" and "splash" options from the command line, but I don't get anything more after the "booting the kernel".
I have this problem with the kernel image that came from the install cd (linux-image-2.6.15-27-server, if I recall correctly) and also with the version I got from a dist-upgrade (linux-image-2.6.15-29-server).

I booted from a livecd, chrooted, installed the linux-image-686 package, and rebooted. Using that kernel works fine.

I have a similar issue, but with a "CPU too old" message, with the Gutsy 7.10 server edition on the same board - see bug #150728.

David appears to have worked around this with the Alt CD.
Luca possibly has a different issue??

My issue was with a similar, but not 100% identical, motherboard/cpu.
I already have the Hardy cd with me and I'll test it in the M10000 Via as soon as I get my hands on that system, and I'll report in the relevant bug (#150728)
