I have installed Dapper beta twice and both times the keyboard layout was set to US-english, although I selected Finnish during the installation. Perhaps these two are the same bug and a separate bug report for mine is not needed? There's also this somewhat similar report: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/27284

Could you try this with a current daily build (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/)? We've fixed a lot of bugs in this area, and this one might well be among them. Thanks in advance.

Sorry, but at the moment there is no time to do that. I setup my system with text-Install-CD flight6 und updated via aptitude / Synaptic.
Maybe i find the time on the next weekend but can't primise.

Sorry about being so late with this. I just installed the desktop version of the Release Candidate. When the installation was ready, the keyboard layout was set to Finnish, but after some time I noticed that it was changed to English :-o

I installed again and checked the layout after every change I made in the system. I found out that the problem is in dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. It suggests English keyboard layout by default, even if the Finnish one is selected during the installation and already in effect. Apparently the user doesn't have to do anything else but click through the program hitting Enter and he gets his keyboard layout wrong (if its other than English). And this is what I think many users do when they use the program to set the refresh rate of their monitor - they click through everything else until they get to the monitor settings thinking they are just leaving everything else as it is. I remember being told more than once that it's OK doing so, when I was worried about messing up my system. I hope this can still be fixed.

This upload should fix Ari's issue. (To fix an existing installation, something like 'echo ubiquity debian-installer/keymap string fi-latin1 | sudo debconf-set-selections' should do the trick.) I hope this fixes the original problem too; if it doesn't, please reopen this bug with details.

ubiquity (1.0.10) dapper; urgency=low

  * Explicitly refer to /var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/syslog for
more details when install.py fails; not everyone seems to be reading the
    crash dialog text.
  * Ask for /var/log/syslog in the crash dialog text as well (in case it
does get read); some errors land there rather than
/var/log/installer/syslog. (I'll consolidate the logging a bit after the
    Dapper release.)
  * When copying symlinks, check for existing dangling symlinks as well as
other types of file (closes: Malone #47054).
  * Fix crash if the default partition selection somehow includes partitions
not in the list of choices (closes: Malone #46910).
  * Copy debian-installer/keymap to the installed system (closes: Malone
    #40627).
  * Automatic update of included source packages: grub-installer
    1.14ubuntu5, localechooser 0.27ubuntu21.

I just installed a fresh Edgy and found some more info about this issue. This seems to be partially a user interface issue.

This is what users are most likely to do:
1. Boot a Desktop CD with locale setting 'Suomi' (Finland).
2. Run the Install program.
3. In the keyboard selection screen, users see that Finnish keyboad layout is selected by default (line blue).
4. Users just press 'Next'.
5. Later in the installation process users note that keyboard selection however is 'en_US'.

Some users however note in step 3. that even though main keyboard category is Finnish, no keyboard variant is selected. Thus those users activate keyboard variant Fi from the right-hand-side selection screen and eventually end up with a correct keyboard layout.

Fix: make keyboard type 'Finnish' AND variant type 'Fi' selected by default.

Colin, I just had the same bug appear with Feisty beta desktop cd (no problem with Herd 4 and 5).

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and us was indeed proposed instead of French (I did a French install, selecting French keyboard before booting Ubuntu and in ubiquiy)

I'll reopen the bug for now, just tell me if you'd rather I open a separate bug report

Reopening this bug (the description matches my pb perfectly, but Bug #27284 might be related, except for the package tagged as affected)

Steps to reproduce the bug : download and install Feisty Beta, choosing fr keyboard (or any non-us keyboard), then after install/reboot, install proprietary drivers (nvidia in my case). After rebooting (like you're asked) you'll end up with an us keyboard in X (not with the console, Ctrl-Alt-F1 for example)

I believe this has been long-since fixed, and indeed I cannot reproduce it in Karmic. If you can reproduce this bug, please file a new one, attaching /var/log/installer/syslog and /etc/default/console-setup.
