I repeated the process, removing "quiet nosplash" from the boot arguments. Here is the complete error message, which begins right after loading the OHCI module:

This sequence repeats about four times. After the last time, it continues booting, and the next line I recognized was "Begin: Moving mount points..." I tried to catch any other hdc error, but the screen was scrolling pretty damn fast. One of them said "failed opcode was: 0xec". There are (obviously) a lot of errors during the boot process about Missing /some/directory, and eventually it asks me to remove the CD and reboot.

Using the very latest Ubuntu snapshot (0329.1), I tried the boot options suggested, but none of them worked. I will download the latest Kubuntu snapshot and give it a try.

No luck on Kubuntu, either.

With latest Ubuntu and Kubuntu snapshot the problem has been fixed, you try to insert irqpoll and noapic parameters in grub option (or you try to insert only noapic parameter).

Sorry, but the problem is not fixed. I just tried the 0331 build from this morning with every possible boot parameter: irqpoll noapic nolapic acpi=off pci=noacpi

I have the same problem with my desktop system (Celeron 1GHz, ASUS board, ...).

I managed to start it by typing in boot:
  live noacpi

Though I'm not sure that this is very related.

I am experiencing the same problem with the AMD64 build of the Ubuntu Dapper Flight 6 LiveCD.

Error messages are essentially the same, except I get different block and sector numbers:

I have tried the boot options listed above (irqpoll noapic noacpi) but have had no luck. I do not hear the GDM startup sound - the system doesn't seem to do anything but stall trying to read hdc.

I am on a K8 system, MSI K8N Platinum mobo with AMD3700+.

I have the same problem with the live CD Breezy Badger flight 6 i368 on my system. This is a MSI RS480M2 motherboard and AMD64 3500+ processor with ATI onboard graphics and an IBM Deckstar hard drive. Same symptoms as described in step 1 and 2. However in step 3. The login in screen dose finally appear and I can get the desktop up. However everything runs slowly and there are problems shutting down the system.

I have an Asus A7N8X-X (nForce2 400) board and have a similar problem. I once had it with my Debian installation. It happend when the generic IDE driver was used instead of the special nForce driver. It seams that the order of the drivers was the key to solve it.

Hi, Have exactly the same problem with Samsung TS-H552-U CD/DVDW. Perhaps it is related to Samsung drivers? Breezy worked perfectly all the time.

Same problem here with an Asus DVD-E616A (master drive). I was able to start the LiveCD by booting on the slave drive (Pioneer DVR-108DX).

Same problem with the april 24 liveCD. I tested it on 3 different computers, all of which took at least 30 seconds during the "mounting root file system" step, all computers showing various drive errors in dmesg output.

I tried booting Dapper Beta on a system similar to my own: ASUS A7N8X Deluxe rev. 1.04 (mine is 2.00) and a Samsung 32x CD-RW (mine's a 16x DVD-RW) . Aside from the fact that it didn't default to 1280x1024 resolution, it worked flawlessly.

Tried livecd 6.06 and i386 6.06 with removed quiet and splash in command line. Both showing " ide: failed opcode was: unknown". I guess it is something with the optimiziation of compiler making the code which is too specific.

These don't look like initramfs issues to me. Not sure why they landed on my plate.

I tried Dapper Beta 1 and Beta 2 and I have the same problem except for I do not even get error messages. The system just hangs at mounting root filesystem or, if I start withouth splash, it loads the ramdisk, but fails to load the kernel.

O.k. I played around a little further and noticed:

1) If I select any resolution and leave the splash, the system will hang at mounting root filesystems.

2) If I select 'VGA' and remove 'quiet splash --', I get unto a point were the boot process hangs at the USB adapter.

3) If I select any other resolution than VGA (but not 1280x1024), I do not see the boot messages (i.e. my screen is blank, but has a signal), but I can boot into the system (I just have to wait).

4) Regardless of what resolution I select at boot time, Dapper uses the (incorrect resolution of 1024x768, 60 Hz).

I disconnected the Samsung and tried with a Panasonic cdrw and it gave me also a flood of ide errors, no-dma warnings, etc. Now I quess it is something with PCI or chipset... As I have a spare 20Gig HW tried to install a clean Breezy from CD and then upgrade it through Web. It worked!!! Didnt try everything but it looks okay. So the bug is only at the install procedure - hardware detection might mix up smthing.

I just ran into this bug. This bug 36667 says that it is a duplicate of this bug, 34172, but I think they are separate.

I found a solution to the problem on my system. When I rebooted with out quiet and splash, I noticed the log scroll by saying that it recognized my cdrom drive as device hdf. Well, it always used to be hdc.

So the reason why it was hanging on 'waiting for root device' was because it was trying to load /dev/hda5 as my root device but for some reason the linux kernel after the upgrade decided to call my first hard drive "/dev/hde"...

So I modified grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab and it boots fine...

FYI, before I upgraded to dapper, /proc/ide/ looked like:

hdb -> ide0/hdb

After booting the new kernel, /proc/ide looks like:

I do have a scsi board and a promise ATA controller plugged in, but since these were in the system before, in my opinion the linux kernel should not have messed with my ide port ordering...

Jeff, I'm afraid you have bug 6367, which will not be fixed before dapper because we don't have time to test the impact of the fix on others.

There is a suggested fix in that bug, boot by adjusting the root= line, and then if the change was permanent just change hda in /etc/boot/grub.list and /etc/fstab to hde -- if the change happens depending on exterior forces (e.g. docking station) use UUID= lines

I have a similar problem with the PPC version of the Dapper Ralease Candidate. I have tried booting on a 12" Aluminum Powerbook, a 15" Aluminum powerbook and a 13" iBook G4 without and all three have the same problem. All three freeze after spitting out a lot of similar messages and will refuse to boot.

I have yet to boot the live CD on a mac succesfully.

I have the same problem on my AthlonXP machine. Ubuntu stalls on the "mounting root filesystem".

I'm getting the same bug as the parent, no matter what I disable or enable, on an A8N-E. This is not the same bug as the other bug, afaik, it's an issue with ide-cd and certian nforce4 ultra chipsets.

Mine is a 4-year old VIA chipset.

For me, the installer went through only after removing the “quiet splash –” from the default kernel line. The errors were still there, but at least it moved beyond.

I encountered this bug when using the LiveCD. I've had no problem installing with the Server CD tho. I have a Radeon Xpress 200 chipset.

Launched the PC LiveCD on an unpartioned P3 machine. The GUI displayed "Mounting root file system" for quite a while, then displayed in text "Uncompressing Linux. . . Ok, booting the kernel." Then a series of "[nnn.nnn] hdd: ide_intr: huh? expected Null handler on exit" and "[nnn.nnn] I/O error on device hdd, logical block 357298". There were long delays after each line. I cancelled the process.

The same CD previously ran fine on another machine (P4) with Windows XP Pro running. Created the PC Alternate CD and it installed correctly on the P3 machine using the text installer. FWIW, the CD/DVD players on both machines have been in use a more than a year w/o problems. RedHat and Solaris have installed w/o problems on the P3.

I'm trying to install (clear install) Dapper Final Release.
