Bug Description

I try to install the xubuntu-desktop to test it, i also use KDE desktop.
But when i launch my session with GDM or KDM, i can't do anything. I see the xfce wallpaper but nothing else.
Some people on the forum report the bug to on the this thread

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=140914&highlight=xubuntu-desktop

They talk about right problems.

I install xubuntu-desktop on my dapper flight 6 after a normal install of Kubuntu ( and all the upgrades) . Same thing on my two computers (laptop and desktop).

Excuse for my poor english and if that bug have been already report.

I'm able to reproduce the bug in this way:
install kubuntu-desktop and login into a KDE session. After logging out, if you try to login into an XFCE session you get the wallpaper and nothing else. If you remove the file ".gtkrc-2.0" in the user home directory you can login again into XFCE, but the next time you will use KDE the file will be created again (it is located in the kubuntu-default-settings package). So, I don't know if the bug is to be assigned to xubuntu-desktop or kubuntu-desktop...

Hi everybody,

I was looking for this bug report before reporting the same issue.
I definitly think that in Dapper, there is an conflict between gtk apps and kde (maybe qt, but I don't really know, I'm not a developper). That's why I think this bug is linked with that one I had already reported https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-artwork/+bug/36046

You had (developpers team) classified as an minor issue, but I think it should be seen as a major issue (I say why further). And this present bug reported by wra is the perfect example. He is (maybe) a new linux user who first installed kubuntu, but he's heard about other desktop environments (gnome and xfce) and wants to try them.

What will this user say... "it just does not work, or not correctly (in the same bug report, I had added a comment about openoffice's icons which disappear in gnome when kubuntu and ubuntu -desktops are installed together).

The normal user won't think or know that it is an issue due to the fact that kubuntu-destop is installed on the same system. Does he have to know that he shouldn't have several "desktops" (ubuntu-desktop, etc.) installed on the same system ?
Nevertheless, everywhere (on ubuntu's website, kubuntu's website, etc.), it is written that you can swicth easily from kubuntu to ubuntu or xubuntu by installing the corresponding [...]-desktop metapackage. So, what's the matter ? How does the new linux user have to deal with this problem ? Does he have to uninstall all the kde environment ? How ? Reinstall the whole system ? That's why I think that it should be classified as a major issue.

Mark Shuttleworth wrote (a comment in the bug I had reported) : "I'm sure the problem comes from having both ubuntu and Kubuntu desktop metapackages installed, which means you are running an interesting mix of the two different platforms. This is a highly unusual configuration, and at this
stage I don't think we can devote resources to tracking it down.".
"Highly unusual configuration" yet, it is written on this page http://www.kubuntu.org/docs/about-kubuntu/C/index.html (at the end) that "To install Kubuntu you just need to install the kubuntu-desktop package". Is it going to work differently with Dapper ?

I know that you all (developpers) have a lot of work and I would help you if I could code, but I think all that is contradictory.

So, I have tested several things, on the same computer (mine) :

First, the same thing that is described in this bug report.

Second, I tried the xubuntu (beta 2) live CD (so, this means xfce alone, of course), it works fine.

Third, I have installed ubuntu on an external hdd (I felt like testing this new fonctionnality... great ! lol !) and I wanted to check whether or not it would work well with just ubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-destop (I already had an idea...) and it works fine.

So, this is all about those issues. I hope you (developpers) are going to have "the will" (and enough time, of course) to fix this.

Thank you all for your great work !

Vincent

This bug is known and far for being a minor issue (was the severity set to minor?).
But it's really not easy to fix, and have already been discussed on the devel list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xubuntu-devel/2006-April/000888.html).

VincentRC i really got your point :).

that's all true ... anyway all the problems you can have whit
kubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop installed came from just one file
... to have gtk app looking like qt ones there is a file on your home
dir. we know this isssue and i guess we should try to figure out a
good solution with the kubuntu guys. i think for the official release
this bug will be closed :).

No Gauvain, the bug which has been set to minor was the one I had reported :
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-artwork/+bug/36046

The problem is that not only it affects ubuntu-artwork, but openoffice's icons too which completely disappear in gnome as I have already said several times.

Should I report another bug for issue too ?

I just copy and paste a comment I have written in the bug report number 36046, I think it should help the whole team as it is closely linked :

"Ok, thanks to the intervention of Daniele Favara in the bug report number 40072, I have been able to make some tests, and I have observed some interesting things.

Indeed, as I said in my comment about an conflict between kubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop (see here : https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/40072)
It seems that there is conflict between every gtk based desktop environment and qt/kde.

So, he told me "[...] anyway all the problems you can have whit
kubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop installed came from just one file
... to have gtk app looking like qt ones there is a file on your home
dir." (~/gtkrc-2.0), and indeed, the problem was solved by deleting the gtkrc-2.0 file just before logging to xfce.

Then I tested the same thing just before logging into gnome, and everything was solved too !
Icons, menus, everything in gnome was normal (orange, not blue anymore), and openoffice's icons were not disappearing anymore too !

So now, you have a more precise idea of the problem, even if I think you already knew (lol !), but maybe not as this issue has been assigned to the ubuntu-artwork team.
Maybe it should be assigned to the kde/kubuntu team, as this file (~/gtkrc-2.0) is created by kde ?"

This bug seems to have been fixed, like this one Bug #36046, as the cause was the same (~/gtkrc-2.0). Everything works fine for me now (ubuntu-artwork, openoffice.org in gnome and xfce)
