Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

Hi,

since i installed ubuntu i hod this bug, and since there was no one who reported it here, i am doing it :)

The problem is that when you plug in a headphones jack, speakers are not unmuted.

The problem is well described here on the wiki for this laptop : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/Lenovo3000N100_0768

And there is even a beginning of a patch on the alsa bugtracker : https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=2581

I applied this patch on alsa 0.1.14rc2 and installed only snd-hda-intel and it is working great.

I have the same issue on a Lenovo 3000 V100 running feisty, and google search suggests that other laptops using the chip have the same issue.

Any chance this could be fixed in feisty?

I have same problem with HP Pavilion dv9297ea but I have a workaround (see laptop testing page, community supplied laptops for full report).

Basically, press mute, plug in phones, then unmute. sound comes through phones and not main speaker. To reverse, press mute, unplug phones, then unmute...sound now comes through main speakers again.

Is this the same as Bug #94566, which should be fixed with the new kernel 2.6.20-14.

Doesn't work for me.

I'm going to try compiling alsa by hand with the patch to see if that fixes the issue

Update on Toshiba satellite P205:

After recent update of Ubuntu the problem seems to be solved.
2.6.22-9-generic (package version 2.6.22-9.25)
alsa-base 1.0.14 (package version 1.0.14.1ubuntu1)

File ' /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base' contains the following line:

options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo

How it's working now:
 * Muting 'front' channel mutes the speakers
 * Changing 'front' level (volume) with volume weel un-mutes the speakers
 * Plugging headphones into the front jack mutes the speakers
 * Unplugging the headphones un-mutes the speakers
 * Checking 'headphones' mixer option actually gives sound to the front jack

Mic, front mic, mic boosts also work as intended.

I'm marking as related to 2.6.22 because I had problems with it, however in linux-image-2.6.22-10-generic version 2.6.22-10.30 the problems got considerably worse, as noted in bug #134125. At least in -10 I tested the "model" switch and it didn't help.

Confirming: 2.6.22-10 breaks the achievements of 2.6.22-9. Seems like the model parameter to snd_hda_intel do not take effect anymore.
On my Toshiba Satellite P205 with 2.6.22-9, model="lenovo" everything worked 100% OK. PLZ don't let it crawl into the release!!!

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
