Bug Description

Previously, an s390-tools upgrade was only requested in conjunction with a kernel upgrade.
Since new additions to the package have been made with backwards compatibility in mind, and a lot of backport efforts and patch management can be saved this way, IBM would like to upgrade s390-tools regularly as done for the previous releases.

So latest is v2.25.0:
https://github.com/ibm-s390-linux/s390-tools/releases/tag/v2.25.0
which was created for kernel 6.1.

Since the plan is to have kernel 6.2 in lunar, I'm wondering if we should still go with the 2.25.0 or if there will be another s390-tools update, esp. for 6.2 (that will come in time for lunar FF)?

I've heard that we'll get a new version tagged, that will be released in time for lunar FF.
So I'll not got with 2.25 yet ...

Hi Frank,

just wanted to give a separate note here as well, as it might be important
for packaging (you might have already noticed it though).

As you can see in the changelog, the vmconvert tool was completely removed.
Also vmur's option -c was removed to convert vmdumps. Instead zgetdump
gained full support for vmdumps and a conversion won't be necessary anymore.
Man pages were updated accordingly.

regards,
Jan

Hi Jan, thanks for the heads-up.
I just ran through the details at:
https://github.com/ibm-s390-linux/s390-tools/releases/tag/v2.26.0
and noticed that.
I'll have to play a bit with it, but for the packaging itself there is no change (I think) since it's still the zgetdump tools that - at the end - is packaged, shipped and installed.
That's what I've noticed after a local build.

Erm. So, this version is for kernel 6.2, right? So is it OK to upload it when we still are on 6.1 in the archive?

Frank Heimes (fheimes) wrote :

Yes it's okay to already upload it now - all critical things will also work with 6.1.
There are just a few tools that will make use of some kernel 6.2 kernel facilities.
But it's better to have v2.26.0 in now and wait for kernel 6.2 for these selected cases than the other way around.
